Photographer Challenges ‘American Beauty’ Standards With 14 Women Of All Shapes

For her “American Beautiful” series, San Francisco-based photographer Carey Fruth placed people with various body types in front of dreamy flowerbeds in an effort to rethink what it means to be “beautiful” in America. Fruth was inspired by a sexually explicit scene in which Kevin Spacey fantasizes about a friend of his daughter. The same name of this movie’s 1999 debut.

“By escaping into a fantasy dream girl world and letting go of that fear, they free themselves up to direct that energy they once wasted on convincing themselves that they weren’t good enough to other parts of their life,” Fruth told Huffpost.
